NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. — The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs used a 28-2 run midway through the first half to bust open a close game en route to a 95-61 rout of the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference game Saturday afternoon at the Tripp Center in North Dartmouth, Mass. The win gives the Corsairs an 21-13 overall record and a 6-8 mark in conference play. Southern Maine dropped to 9-16 overall and 4-10 in the conference. Both teams will be on the road Tuesday night at sites to be determined in the first round of the Little East Conference Championship Tournament.
Leading 16-9 with 12:55 till halftime after two free throws by USM freshman Josh Daniels (Seattle, Wash.), the Corsairs scored the next nine points, all by senior Joe Britto (New Bedford, Mass.), to take a 25-9 advantage.
Senior Jason Levecque (Westbrook, Maine) broke the Huskies’ drought with a basket, but the Corsairs scored the next 19 points to lead 44-11 with 5:53 to play in the half. Britto had the first seven points in the 19-0 run to personally account for 16 straight UMD points. UMD would lead at the half 53-21.
Southern Maine play better in the second half, but was never able to get the deficit below 32.
Junior Chris Lapriore (Grafton, Mass.) led all scorers with 21 points for UMD. Britto finished with 19 points and senior Matt McAuliffe (Sutton, Mass.) added 16 points. The Corsairs would shoot 54.3 percent (38 for 70) for the game from the field and enjoyed a 37-29 advantage on the boards.
Daniels was the lone USM player to reach double figures finishing with 15 points.
