Principia 73, Maryville (Mo.) 63

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Despite suffering a 73-63 loss to Principia College (IL), the Maryville University men's basketball team clinched a spot in the 2005 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Men's Basketball Tournament thanks to other results in conference play. The Saints drop to 10-14 overall and 7-6 in the SLIAC, while the Panthers kept their tournament hopes alive by improving to 10-12 on the season an 6-7 in the conference.

The Saints started the game on a 7-0 run, but Principia would answer with an 8-0 run of their own to take their first lead with 14:32 remaining to play in the first half. The two teams would trade the lead five more times in the half, as Maryville took a one-point lead heading into halftime.

Principia opened the second half on a jumper by Sam Gilman to take their fourth and final lead of the game. The Panthers would lead by as many as 11 points in the half, and they hit 10-of-14 freebies in the final two minutes of the game to secure the 10-point win.

Principia hit 13-of-22 (.591) from the field in the second half and finished with a 49.0 field-goal percentage for the game, including 5-of-12 (.417) from behind the arc. After shooting 47.6 percent from the field in the first half, Maryville was held to just 37.1 percent in the second half, including 7.1 percent (1-of-14) from three-point range.

Maryville was led by junior Ben Hebl with 18 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals. Sophomore Jason Rezabek, who saw 20 minutes of action on the floor, finished with 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots.

Principia had four players score in double figures, and was led by John Tegtmeyer with a game-high 22 points. he also grabbed nine rebounds, dished out two assists and recorded one block and one steal. Gilman added 15 points and three assists, while James Aimonetti and Tucker Fendon scored 13 and 12 points respectively.

The Saints will finish regular season play on Tuesday, when they take on the Gorlocks of Webster University in a 6:00 pm SLIAC contest on the road. Head coach Matt Rogers and his squad will then return to action on Friday, February 25, in the first round of the SLIAC Tournament.
