Alfred 69, Hartwick 62

ONEONTA, N.Y. — Sophomore center Dillon Stein (Norwin/N. Huntington, Pa.) had 21 points and eight rebounds to lead Alfred University to a 69-62 victory over the Hartwick College men’s basketball team on Saturday afternoon.

Stein made 7-of-9 field goals and went 7-for-7 from the foul line to pace the Saxons (13-12, 7-7 Empire 8). He scored 16 points and hauled in four rebounds in the second half.

Junior guard Chris Lemasters (Mansfield/Mansfield, Pa.) hit two free throws to give Alfred a 50-29 lead with 9:23 left in the second half. Hartwick (2-22, 0-13 Empire 8) answered with a 13-2 run to pull within 52-42 with 5:41 remaining.

Freshman guard/forward Greg Betancourt (Northern Highlands/Allendale, N.J.) converted a 4-point play for the Hawks to make it 63-59 with 53 seconds left. He was fouled on a 3-pointer from the corner and made the ensuing free throw.

The Saxons then put the game out of reach by connecting on 6-of-6 free throw attempts. Lemasters hit two free throws with 46 seconds remaining, and junior forward Ryan Hallett (Caledonia-Mumford/Caledonia, N.Y.) made 4-of-4 in the final 30 seconds.

Betancourt scored a game-high 23 points on 6-for-12 shooting. He made 5-of-9 from 3-point range and converted 6-of-9 free throws.

Freshman forward Sterling Green (Burlington Township/Burlington Township, N.J.) had 10 points and two steals, and junior guard Tim Kindlon (Bethlehem/Delmar, N.Y.) contributed nine points and four assists for Hartwick.

The Hawks will play host to Utica College for an Empire 8 Conference game at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
