Hampden-Sydney 64, Roanoke 56

SALEM, VA-- — Hampden-Sydney’s basketball team scored a 64-56 victory over Roanoke College in the quarterfinals of the 2005 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament Saturday. With the win, the Tigers (17-9) move into the semifinals where they will match up with top-seeded Randolph-Macon (16-9) at 2 pm Sunday in the Salem Civic Center.

Hampden-Sydney junior forward Aaron Lewek (Raleigh, NC/Leesville Road) scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead H-SC as ten Tigers scored at least four points. Freshman guard Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan) added ten points as the Tigers shot 52 percent (23-for-44) from the floor, while holding Roanoke to 37 percent (19-for-51) and recording nine steals.

Roanoke opened the game on a 12-3 run as Kevinn Hunter and Josh LaPorte each scored six points in the opening five minutes. The Tigers battled back to tie the game at 19 by the six minute mark as Mladen Cvijanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/Miller School) and Aaron Lewek combined to score eight points during the team’s 16-5 run.

Hampden-Sydney out-scored Roanoke 14-5 over the final 5:05 of the half, taking a nine point lead into the break after three pointer by Drew Prehmus beat the first half buzzer to give the Tigers a 33-24 advantage.

In the second half, Roanoke was able to trim the Tiger lead to three, 38-35, as Kevinn Hunter scored five the Maroons first 11 points of the period. However, the Tigers responded with a 15-2 run, fueled by five points from Prehmus and freshman guard Tyler Murray (Atlanta, GA/Harrison), en route to a 53-37 lead with 4:44 to play.

Three’s by Josh LaPorte, Tee Jackson and Ben Shrader helped the Maroons cut into the Tiger lead but free throws by Aaron Lewek and Mike Edwards (Richmond, VA/Steward School) gave the Tigers the 64-56 win as H-SC advanced into the ODAC semifinals for the tenth year in-a-row.

Hunter paced the Maroons with 15 points, while Josh LaPorte had a double-double with 11 points and ten rebounds. The Maroons out-rebounded Hampden-Sydney, 33-28, but also had more turnovers, 19-14.
