Clark 69, Coast Guard 54

WORCESTER, MA — Clark University Cruises To A Key Win Over Coast Guard 80-64

In the last regular season New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game of the season, Clark University men’s basketball defeated Coast Guard 69-54 in a key conference game on Saturday afternoon at the Kneller Athletic Center. Clark has won five out of their last six games and finished 5-7 in the NEWMAC and in fourth place. The Cougars will host Coast Guard on Tuesday, February 22 at 7:00 pm in the NEWMAC Tournament Quarterfinals. Trailing by one with 8:33 to play in the first half, the Cougars went on a 16-8 run over the final minutes of the half to take a 33-26 lead. Clark pushed their lead to 15 points after a three-pointer by first-year Pat Ochoa (Springfield, MA/Commerce) with 15 minutes remaining in the game. Coast Guard answered and trailed by 10-points after a three-pointer by first-year Al Sowers (Monrovia, MD/St. John’s School at Prospect Hall) with just over 14 minutes to go. However, Clark’s sophomore Asher Cowan (Petersborough, NH/Cushing Academy) took over at the 10-minute mark, draining three straight field goals from long range to give the Cougars a commanding 20-point lead with just under nine minutes to play in the contest en route to a 15-point, 69-54 victory. Cowan finished the game with a game-high 18 points, 6-for-11 from long range. Clark’s junior Tim Dutille (Sunapee, NH/Lebanon) was an impressive 6-for-7 from the floor and 3-for-5 from the line for 15 points. Graduate-student Adam Miller (Shrewsbury, MA/St. John’s) playing in his last regular season home game of the season grabbed a game-high 16 points and chipped in eight points for Clark, who finished the season 10-14. First-year Jeff Prebeck (NAPS Columbus, IN/Columbus East) led Coast Guard with 15 points while classmate Craig Johnson (Medford, OR/South Medford) chipped in 13 points. Sowers ended the game with nine points (3-6 3FG) for the Bears who fell to 13-10 overall and 5-7 in the conference and will face the Cougars for the third time this month next Tuesday in the conference tournament.
