The Cougars (12-12) started slow and allowed the Braves (13-11) to open an early 20-7 advantage. However, Averett grabbed the lead after a 21-6 run, which left the Cougars advantage at 28-26. Unfortunately for Averett, they allowed Chowan to end the half on a 14-4 spurt, which gave the Braves a 40-32 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Cougars managed to get no closer than seven points. Averett committed 10 turnovers in the stanza and found themselves on the short end of a 22-13 rebound margin, allowing Chowan to take control.
Sterling Williams led the way with 14 points for the visitors from Averett. Jeremy Haskins netted 12 and Luke Hammond added nine. Trayvon Lathan paved the way for the Braves with 19 points.
The Cougars return to action on Sunday at 4 p.m. with their regular season finale against N.C. Wesleyan College. A win for the Cougars and a loss by Christopher Newport University can give Averett a share of second place in the league’s final standings.
