Augustana 69, Carthage 64

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (11-12, 5-7 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost to CCIW-opponent Augustana College (Ill., 16-7, 8-4 CCIW), 69-64, on Saturday, February 19 at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis., as the Redmen let a 17-point lead slip away in the second half. Carthage led by eight points at halftime, 41-33, after leading by as many as 11, 39-28, at 2:24. The Redmen used a 13-4 run at the start of the second half to take a 17-point lead, 54-37, at 13:28. From there, the Vikings went on a 25-6 run of their own to take the lead for good, 62-60, at 1:32. A layup by the Redmen’s Mark Morrison with 44 seconds to go made it a 66-64 game, but a three-point play by the Vikings’ Rick Harrigan with 20 seconds remaining put Augustana (Ill.) up by four, 66-62, and the Vikings went on to win by five points, 69-64. Augustana (Ill.) shot 45 percent (26-58), while Carthage shot 44 percent (27-62). Jay McAdams-Thornton scored a game-high 20 points for the Vikings on six-of-16 field goals, six-of-nine free throws and 12 rebounds. Rick Harrigan added 18 points and six rebounds. Brian Schlemm topped the Redmen with 16 points on five-of-eight from the floor, including four-of-five from three-point range. Mike Hart had 14 points, a game-high 13 rebounds and three blocked shots, while Kevin Menard chipped in 10 points. Carthage travels to Chicago, Ill,. on Monday, February 21 (7:30 p.m.) for a President’s Day conference game versus North Park University at the North Park Gym. The Redmen conclude their season on Saturday, February 26 (7:30 p.m.) by playing host to CCIW-opponent Wheaton College (Ill.) at the Carthage PEC.
