With the win, Calvin (19-6 overall, 11-3 MIAA) finishes second in the final MIAA regular season standings, one game behind league champion Albion (12-2 MIAA) and one game ahead of third place Hope (10-4 MIAA). The Knights will be the number-two seed for next week’s MIAA Tournament and will host seventh-seeded Kalamazoo next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in a first round game
Senior Brad Sall quickly, hitting a three-pointer only 10 seconds into the game. Three-pointers from Senior Ricky Shilts, junior Joel Hoekstra and Sall within the first six minutes of play gave the Knights a 22-9 lead. Calvin scored another 12 consecutive points to extend their lead. The Knights continued to extend their lead, leading by as many as 25. Calvin led at half-time, 65-43. In the second half, Tri-State narrowed Calvin’s lead to 20 points, but the Knights continued to build up the score, reaching 100 points on a dunk from sophomore Josh Meckes.
“Overall, we did a very nice job. We had a very good game today,” said head coach Kevin Vande Streek. “We were hoping to get the ball down to the posts and have success because they’re not very big. We did a really nice job getting it in there.”
Senior Dan Aultman led the Knights in scoring with a game high 27 points and 10 rebounds. Hoekstra had his first career double-double with career scoring and rebounding highs with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Sall scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Meckes grabbed 10 rebounds and had a game high four blocks and game high three steals. Senior Kyle Trewhella dished out a game high seven assists.
Tri-State was lead by Zach Lear with 18 points, and Micah Williams with 10 points. Brandon Appleton dished out a team high five assists and Aaron Rehrer grabbed a team high four rebounds.
Calvin shot 90% from the free throw line today, making 18 out of 20 shots from the line. Calvin held Tri-State to only 32.9% field goals, achieving one of their team goals.
“Shooting, we did a really nice job the first half, and we got kind of sloppy the second half,” said Vande Streek. “We did a really nice job defensively.”
Tri-State falls to 5-20, 2-12 in the MIAA.
