Capital 95, Baldwin-Wallace 93

BEREA, Ohio — Senior forward Jake Beck scored 20 points and five players in double figures today (Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005) as the Capital University men’s basketball team beat Baldwin-Wallace College, 95-93 in double overtime, in the final Ohio Athletic Conference regular season game at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

With its win, Capital improved to 16-8 overall and 12-6 in the OAC and won its second straight game. With its loss, B-W dropped to 17-8 overall and 10-8 in the OAC and lost for the fifth time in its last six games.

In the first half, B-W jumped out to a 6-0 lead and led by as many as 14 points, 20-6, at 12:16 when junior guard Keith Aufmuth hit a short jumper. Capital then went on a 13-2 run to cut the Yellow Jacket lead to three points at 22-19 at the 6:58 mark when freshman forward Mark Tinklenberg hit a three-pointer. The Yellow Jackets would then outscore the Crusaders 18-13 to stretch their lead to eight points at halftime, 40-32.

In the second half, Capital outscored B-W 10-2 to tie the score at 50-50 when freshman center Brad Buckner made a free-throw to finish a three-point play with 14:07 remaining in the game. B-W then went on a 11-2 run capped by a free-throw from Aufmuth giving the Yellow Jackets a 61-52 lead with 9:38 left in the second stanza. B-W reached its biggest lead of the game at10 points with 8:31 left when junior forward Charod Hale made a short jumper to give the Yellow Jackets a 65-55 lead. The Crusaders battled back again to outscore B-W 18-8 to tie the score at 73-all with 36 seconds to play when Tinklenberg hit another three-pointer. Following a B-W turnover, Beck's shot at a game-winner was blocked by Yellow Jacket sophomore forward Tori Davis and forcing overtime.

In the first overtime, the lead changed five times and there were four ties before B-W took a four-point lead at 85-81 with 1:15 left when freshman guard Tyler Sekerak made one of two foul shots, but Capital senior guard David Kalb connected on two three-pointers to give the Crusaders an 87-85 lead with 15 seconds left. Then B-W senior forward Thad Davis canned a pair of clutch foul shots with 4:18 seconds left to force a second overtime. Capital again had a chance to win it but a Tinkleberg trey was off the mark.

In the second extra session, Capital led the entire time and by as many as three-points at 94-91 with 1:49 left when freshman center Brad Buckner scored on a tip-in off his own miss. Then Thad Davis made two foul shots to cut the lead to 94-93 with 40 seconds left. A foul shot by sophomore guard David Johnson with six seconds remaining then gave Capital a 95-93 lead. Sekerak then missed a chance to win it again. and end the marathon.

Joining Beck in double figures for Capital were Kalb and Tinkleberg with 17 points each, freshman center Jake Measler had 15 and Buckner had 13.

For B-W, Thad Davis led the way with a game-high 32 points, including making 16-of-20 foul shots, and a game-high 11 rebounds. In addition, Aufmuth had a career-high 26 points and Tori Davis had 18 points and eight rebounds.

With Thad Davis's 32 points and 11 rebounds today, he now has 1,849 career points and 961 career rebounds to rank fourth all-time in scoring and rebounding in B-W history.

B-W and Capital will each open 2005 OAC Tournament play on Wednesday, Feb. 23 against undetermined opponents. Capital will play at home and B-W will be on the road. Each game will begin at 7:30 p.m.
