Hauben became Rochester’s career rebounding leader with 1,028 rebounds passing Chris Fite, who grabbed 1,023 from 1988-92. Hauben also moved into fourth place in career scoring with 1,609, passing Dave Sickler (1,603, 1994-98).
"He was tremendous," head coach Mike Neer said of Hauben's performance. "Quietly, I think he remembered Chicago holding him to four points (when UR hosted Chicago in the Palestra on Jan. 30)."
Gabe Perez added 16 points and six assists for UR. Clay Carmody had 19 points for Chicago (6-6, 10-13) which lost at home for the first time this season.
The win was Rochester's 10th straight and 15th in the last 16 games. Rochester is 11-1 in the University Athletic Association, 20-3 overall.
UR maintained its 2.5-game lead over Carnegie Mellon in the UAA race. The Yellowjackets need one win in their last two games – or a Carnegie loss in one of its last three – to clinch the UAA title and automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. Carnegie defeated Washington, 99-93, in St. Louis. UR plays at Washington Sunday. Carnegie goes to Chicago on Sunday, to Case Reserve on Wednesday, and comes to the Palestra on February 26.
Hauben and fellow seniors Gabe Perez, Ryan Mee, and Brendan McAllister become the first Yellowjacket class to win 20 or more games in each of their four seasons.
With the score tied at 48-48, Mee sank a three-pointer from right wing, Hauben made a conventional three-point play (jump hook and free throw) and Joe Canty drilled a three-pointer from the top of the key. The 9-2 run gave the Yellowjackets a 57-50 lead.
Chicago got it down to 57-54, but Hauben made back to back jumpers in the lane and Perez added a layup. It was 63-54 with less than two minutes to play. The Yellowjackets sank seven free throws in the last 90 seconds to seal it.
"I wasn't pleased about giving up a 14-point lead," Neer said. "But when you play a hungry team in their building and hold them off and make some big buckets down the stretch, you have to be proud of the effort you put forth."
