Centre 74, Oglethorpe 72

DANVILLE, Ky. — Centre men win 74-72 thriller in overtime

Senior guard Kyle Roby banked in a three-pointer with two seconds left in overtime to give the Centre College men's basketball team a 74-72 win over Oglethorpe University, Friday, Feb. 18, in Danville, Ky.

The win marks the seventh straight for the Colonels, and ups their record to 18-6 overall and 9-4 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play. Oglethorpe falls to 13-11 overall and 7-5 in league action.

Freshman guard Matt Nestheide scored a team-high 16 points for the Colonels. Junior forward Coy Zerhusen had 14 points and seven rebounds and junior center Reggie Magnusson tallied 13 points and seven rebounds.

Russ Churchwell led the Stormy Petrals posting game-highs in points with 22 and rebounds with 15. Andrew Tulowitzky added 20 points, seven rebounds and three steals in the loss.

The first half was tightly contested featuring four ties and eight lead changes. After a Churchill jumper game Oglethorpe a 21-20 lead, Nestheide hit back-to-back three pointers to ignite a 12-2 run to put the Colonels back in front 32-23. Centre would take a 35-29 lead into the half as freshman guard Thomas Britt (Louisville, Ky.) hit a three pointer at the buzzer.

The Colonels would lead much of the second half, leading by as many as nine points (48-39) at one point. With 1:45 left to play, Tulowitzky knocked down a three pointer to put Oglethorpe up 68-67.

As time expired in the game, Britt was fouled with five seconds left and went to the foul line for two shots. After missing the first attempt, the freshman guard nailed the second one and Josh Burr missed a three pointer to send the game to overtime.

Oglethorpe scored the first four points of overtime to take a 72-68 lead with just under two minutes to play. With less than a minute remaining Magnusson made a layup and was fouled. He made the free throw to pull Centre within 72-71.

After two Oglethorpe missed free throws and a Zerhusen rebound, Centre called timeout. Roby then received a pass and shot a three pointer from the right wing banking it in to put Centre ahead 74-72 with just over a second left. A Stormy Petral desperation shot came up empty as Centre won its eighth-straight home game to improve to 10-1 at home this year.

The Colonels will conlcude their regular season, Sunday, Feb. 20, when they host Millsaps College. Game time for the SCAC contest is set for noon.
