Suffolk 79, Albertus Magnus 66

BOSTON — Led by seniors Chris Emma (Braintree, MA) and Chris Tighe (Easton, MA), the Suffolk University men’s basketball team overpowered Albertus Magnus College Thursday to capture a 79-66 victory on Senior Night at Regan Gymnasium.

In the final home game of their careers, Emma and Tighe each scored in double figures, while Emma recorded a double double. Emma contributed 18 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists while Tighe scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds.

The Rams led the Falcons most of the way, after they took a 16-14 lead on a lay-up by junior Peter Thompson (Braintree, MA) with 10:58 remaining in the first half. Thompson finished with 10 points, one of five Suffolk players in double figures.

An historic moment unfolded in the second half, as Albertus Magnus senior Tim Russell (Burlington, CT) set two GNAC records on the first of two free throws with 13:43 remaining in the game. With the perfect free throw, Russell scored his 786th point of the season and his 2,196 career point, both GNAC records. Russell finished the game with 798 points on the season and 2, 211 career points.

Suffolk was able to keep a comfortable lead throughout most of the second half, with the help of a 7-0 run that started with just under seven minutes remaining in the game, and put the Rams up by 18.

Suffolk junior Josh Morelock (Poplar Grove, IL) joined Emma as one of two players recording double doubles with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Clinton Lassiter (Boston, MA) contributed 13 points, seven coming in the second half, to the winning side.

Russell, who scored a game-high 25 points, also contributed nine rebounds. Freshman Bryan Durr (Meriden, CT) paced the Falcons’ defense by grabbing 15 rebounds.

Suffolk improves to 8-16 overall and 6-11 in the GNAC while Albertus Magnus falls to 2-22 on the season and 1-16 in the GNAC. Suffolk will travel to Rivier College on Saturday to compete in their final regular-season game.
