Messiah 81, Moravian 70

GRANTHAM, PA — Dave Henninger (Carlisle, PA) had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds and the Messiah College Falcons (19-5, 9-4) clinch a spot in the playoffs for the first time since 1991 with a 81-70 victory over the Moravian College Greyhounds (9-16, 5-8) Thursday evening.
A back and forth first half saw both teams shooting the ball well. The Falcons shot 52 percent from the floor and the Greyhounds shot 50 percent. Neither team was able to take control however, and the score was tied at 41 at the break.
Moravian, needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive began to show their desperation. Early in the second half the Greyhounds opened with a 13-5 run building an 8 point lead. Moravian would hold that lead for nearly 13 minutes before Dave Carter (Warrenton, VA) who had 19 points on the night, hit a three-pointer giving Messiah its first lead of the second half. The two teams would battle for several more minutes, trading baskets before Quinn McCullough (Glen Rock, PA) was fouled on a three-point attempt. Quinn hit all three shots and followed them with a fastbreak lay-up to seal the victory for the Falcons.
McCullough finished with a game-high 26 points for Messiah, including an impressive 13 for 15 from the foul line. Zach Wiernicki (Vernon, NY) also scored in double figures for the Falcons dropping in 12 points.
Leading the Greyhounds were Steve Wenderfer (Chester, NJ) with 17 points, Zach Zsilavecz (Bethlehem, PA) with 12 points and Brandon Zaleski (Hackettstown, NJ) with 11 points.
With the win the Falcons secure their best record since 1984. They will attempt to win their 20th game of the season this Saturday when the host the Widener University Pioneers in an 4pm start. A win verses the Pioneers would give Messiah their best record since 1879 when they finished 20-8.
