Fitchburg State 69, Massachusetts College 41

Fitchburg, MA — Fitchburg State established a new school record for wins in a season by defeating visiting MCLA 69-41 in MASCAC women’s basketball action on Thursday evening. The Falcons are now 19-5 overall and 8-3 in the MASCAC. The 1991-92 squad had previously held the record by registering a 18-7 mark 13 seasons ago.

Junior Katie Redican amassed a career-high 24 points while connecting on 5 of 7 three-pointers. Classmate Jen Fontaine added 16 points and 5 steals for the Falcons who enjoyed a 42-17 advantage at the half.

The game marked the final regular season home contest for seniors Cortney Kelly, Samantha Sweeney and J.J. Kirkland. The win marked the 59th for the trio, adding to the record total among senior classes.

MCLA (5-19, 1-10 MASCAC) received an outstanding performance from Ashley Clark who tallied 16 points and corralled a game-best 13 rebounds. Heather LaCasse chipped in with 11 points for the Trailblazers.

Fitchburg State will close out MASCAC action on Saturday when they travel to Bridgewater State for a 5pm showdown. A Falcon win would give FSC a home game in the first round of next week’s MASCAC Tournament. MCLA will close out their season on Saturday when they play at Westfield State.

Earlier in the day, Fontaine was selected to the first team of the ESPN The Magazine 2005 Academic All-District I College Division Women’s Basketball Team. Fontaine, who is a nursing major with an 3.98 GPA, is one of just five student-athletes from New England and New York in Division II and Division III to be named to the first team. She will now advance to the national ballot where she will have a chance to be an Academic All-American.
