Washington and Jefferson 94, Westminster (Pa.) 79

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Washington & Jefferson held Westminster to its lowest point total of the season and moved into a third-place tie in the PAC standings after posting a 94-79 victory over the Titans in men’s basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Henry Memorial Center.

The Titans (14-10, 4-5 PAC) held a four-point lead in the first 10 minutes of the game, but the Presidents rallied to take a 30-25 lead after a lay-up by freshman guard Adam Morrison (Erie, Pa./McDowell) at the 5:45 mark.

Westminster tied the game two minutes later, but the Presidents ended the half on a 13-5 run to take a 45-37 halftime edge.

The Titans took their biggest lead of the second half (55-52) after a three-pointer by Pat O’Connor with 11:53 remaining, but W&J answered once again with nine unanswered points to assume a 61-55 lead at the 8:37 mark. Freshman center Tony Lewis (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Orange) scored six of his 14 points during the nine-point stretch.

Mark DeMonaco brought WC to within 64-63 at the 7:22 mark after a three-point play; however, W&J took command of the game over the next four minutes by out-scoring the Titans by a 13-5 margin. Sophomore guard Brandon Studer (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley) buried a pair of triples and sophomore guard Jon Koch (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) added five points in the game-clinching stretch.

Koch led the Presidents with 20 points and nine rebounds, while sophomore guard Anthony Hairston (Roanoke, Va./Roanoke Catholic) added 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Studer finished with 12 markers. W&J shot 54 percent (38-of-70) and held a 56-33 rebounding advantage.

DeMonaco led the Titans with 18 points, while Ed Pagley added 14. Westminster made only 33 percent (26-of-80) from the field and 18-of-58 attempts from the three-point line.

Washington & Jefferson closes out its regular-season schedule on Saturday at Thiel for a 3:00 pm contest.
