The Shoremen, who held a 33-28 lead at halftime, led by as many as 14 points in the second half. Washington had a nine point lead at 68-59 with four minutes to play in regulation before the Garnet Tide went on the game-tying run. Matt Kurman capped off the run by nailing a three-pointer with two seconds to play in the period to knot the score at 70-70.
Neither team led by more than two points in the first overtime. Washington junior forward Jonathan Webb scored the final two points of the first extra session on a bucket with 27 seconds to play to tie the score at 76-76.
The Shoremen grabbed an 81-78 lead in the second overtime with 4:00 remaining, but a basket by Matt Gustafson with 3:29 remaining and a three-pointer by Dillon McGrew with 3:29 to go put Swarthmore in front, 83-81. A pair of free throws by Kurman with 1:44 remaining pushed the lead to 85-81, but the Shoremen got back within two points at 85-83 on a pair of Webb free throws with 59 seconds remaining. Washington could not get any closer before the final seconds of the game, however, and two more free throws by Kurman with six seconds remaining extended the Swarthmore lead to 87-83. A three-pointer by Washington junior guard Travis Moorewith one second on the clock provided the final margin.
Five different players reached double figures in scoring for the Garnet Tide, led by Ian McCormick, who scored 18 points, grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, and blocked a game-high four shots. McGrew and Kurman each finished with 16 points and five assists, while Gustafson tallied 14 points. Chris Casey chipped in 10 points and a game-high five steals.
Washington sophomore forward Joe Breslin led all scorers with 22 points and matched his career high of three blocked shots. Webb finished with 20 points and a career- and game-high nine assists, while Moore and senior forward Buck Howanski each contributed 10 points for the Shoremen.
