Rutgers-Newark 55, Kean 51

UNION, N.J. — UNION, N.J.(2/16/05) – Rutgers-Newark sophomore forward Jermont Horton (Irvington, N.J.) knocked down a three-pointer with 25 seconds remaining to lift the Scarlet Raiders past host Kean University in the final men’s basketball game played at D’Angola Gymnasium on Wednesday evening. The pivotal New Jersey Athletic Conference victory improved Rutgers-Newark to 15-9 overall, 8-7 in the conference, while the Cougars dropped to 13-11 overall, 7-8 in the NJAC.

Trailing 51-50, Horton connected on his fourth trey of the contest off the assist from senior guard Manny Rios (Newark, N.J.) with just 25 seconds remaining. On the next Cougar possession, Kean turned the ball over on a pass out of the paint, and Scarlet Raider junior guard Justin Carter (Paterson, N.J.) hit both free throws to seal the victory.

In the first half, the Cougars raced out to a 20-7 lead with just under 11 minutes remaining in the first half behind seven points from junior forward B.J. Hamby (Bridgewater, N.J.) and five points from senior guard Tan Kesler (Adana, Turkey) in the game-opening run. The Scarlet Raiders closed the first half on a 16-8 run to cut the deficit to five at halftime, as junior forward Stephen Taylor (Ewing, N.J.) and Horton each had five points in the spurt.

For the Cougars, Hamby finished with 13 first-half points, while Horton had seven points for the Scarlet Raider in the opening half.

In the victory, Horton finished with 22 points and five rebounds, while junior forward Chinedu Ibeh (Colonia, N.J.) added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Hamby led the Cougars with 20 points, hitting 7-of-11 shots from the floor and 5-of-5 from the foul line, while junior forward Armet Coles (Staten Island, N.Y.) added 16 points and six rebounds and Kesler had a game-high seven assists and three steals.

Kean closes out the season in key NJAC action on Saturday, February 19, when they travel to Montclair State University at 1 p.m. Rutgers-Newark plays at Rowan to close out the regular season at the same time.
