With 3 seconds remaining in regulation AC held a 65-63 lead, after AC's Mark Bohlen nailed two free throws. After a timeout, Kzoo threw a Hail Mary and Kzoo's Tim Herman found the prize as he beat the buzzer and sent the contest into overtime.
It did take the officials a couple of seconds to gather to count the score by Herman. On the play, the clock failed to start on time, but officials ruled the bucket was good and the game headed to overtime.
In overtime, AC outscored Kzoo 11-7 and rode the backs of seniors Brian Schaefer and Adam Novak. Schaefer scored eight points, while Novak added three points and both made key plays down the stretch to seal the contest.
Schaefer and Novak provided two big plays with 40 seconds remaining in overtime and the score tied at 70. On the possession, AC missed several shots, but Novak gave AC the lead for good with his offensive rebound put back and AC used a Schaefer steal on K's next possession to close the door. Schaefer nailed four free throws over the last 18 seconds for AC.
AC was led by Schaefer's 23 points, while Novak did his best Magic Johnson act with 11 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists. Billy Collins Jr. added 16 points.
With his 23 points, Schaefer now has 1,463 career points, which moves him into fourth all-time in AC history. Schaefer passed AC greats Mark White (1984-88) and Michael Mack (1981-85).
AC will finish the regular season on Saturday when they host Olivet College for a 3 p.m. contest.
