Junior swingman MARK WASHINGTON (East Orange, NJ/West Side) scored 14 of his game-high 18 points in the first half as New Jersey City University built a 15-point margin in the first period, and cruised to a 72-43 victory over John Jay College on Tuesday evening.
NJCU improves to 16-8 overall this season, and 8-0 all-time against John Jay. It was the first meeting between the schools since January 10, 1998. The Bloodhounds (7-18) have lost three straight. NJCU shot 54.9 percent for the game (28-51), after sinking 57.9 percent in the opening period (11-19). The NJCU reserves outscored the JJC bench, 38-0.
Washington scored NJCU’s first nine of the contest, and had as many points in the first period as the entire John Jay team. With JJC leading 8-7 early on, Washington keyed a 12-0 run that put the Gothic Knights in front for good. He opened the run with a jumper at 14:16, and scored seven of the 12 points during the streak as NJCU pulled in front 19-8 at 10:14.
Washington shot 7-of-8 from the field and scored his 18 points in only 22 minutes of action, adding a game-high seven rebounds, all defensively. Freshman forward ANTOINNE MORGANO (Newark, NJ/University) scored seven of his 11 points (5-5) in the first period, while playing just 12 minutes.
Senior shooting guard JAVIER RODRIGUEZ (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) tallied eight points (2-4), four assists, and three steals in 18 minutes, while junior forward SANNI OJIBARA (Irvington, NJ/Irvington) chipped in nine points (3-6) and five rebounds in only nine minutes off the bench. Sophomore forward DEVIN DAVIS (Red Bank, NJ/Red Bank Regional) had a well-rounded effort with six points, six rebounds, five assists, and four blocks in 20 minutes.
Senior guard Sharod Tomlinson (Queens, NY/Christ the King) had a team-high 14 points for the Bloodhounds, with five assists and three steals in 39 minutes. He shot 3-of-9 from the field, but was good on 7-of-8 at the free-throw line. Senior swingman Marinko Djokic (Queens, NY/Flushing) had 12 points (5-10) and six rebounds in 39 minutes. Junior guard Aramis Ramos (Orange County, NY/Washingtonville) chipped in nine points and six rebounds while playing all 40 minutes in a losing cause, but struggled from the field (2-12) and from long range (1-7).
John Jay finished shooting 29.5 percent for the game (13-44) and 3-of-17 from three-point territory (.176) after a dismal first period from the floor (4-22, 18.2 percent). JJC did make 14-of-16 from the line (.875).
NJCU’s largest lead was 32 points, 61-39, with 7:31 left, before prevailing by 29. NJCU out-rebounded John Jay, 34-23, and turned 19 Bloodhound turnovers into a 23-12 difference in points. NJCU also held a 26-14 margin in the paint.
NJCU will be off for eight days before the final game of the regular season on Wednesday, February 23 at 8pm when the Knights face Mitchell College in New London, CT. NJCU will then play in the Association of Division III Independents Northeast Regional Tournament at St. Joseph’s College in Standish, ME, on February 25-26.
