Guilford 89, Washington and Lee 71

GREENSBORO, NC — Junior Genaro Lawhorn's (Greensboro, NC/Oak Ridge Military Academy) game-high 19 points led four Guilford players in double-figure scoring in the host Quakers' 89-71 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball win over Washington and Lee Tuesday. Guilford swept the season series with the Generals by winning the regular-season finale for both teams.

The victory secures the sixth seed for Guilford (14-11, 9-9 ODAC) in this weekend's ODAC Men's Basketball Tournament in Salem, VA. The Quakers play third-seeded Bridgewater in the tournament's opening round this Saturday (2/19) at 8:00 p.m. in the Salem Civic Center.

Washington and Lee (2-23, 0-18 ODAC) ends the 2004-05 campaign on a 14-game losing skid. The Generals join the 1993-94 Eastern Mennonite team as the lone squads in ODAC history with an 0-18 league record.

Guilford never trailed in the game and used a 10-2 run midway through the first half to grab a 13-point lead. The Quakers finished the period with a 9-1 flourish and led 49-31 at halftime. Lawhorn tallied 12 points and freshman Kerry Atkinson (Raleigh, NC/Wakefield) added 11 points and four steals in the first half. The Quakers shot over 54 percent from the floor and converted Washington and Lee's 16 first-half turnovers into 27 points.

Washington and Lee trimmed a 28-point second-half deficit to 14 with 8:58 left in the game, but drew no closer. Sophomore Greg Beinemann (Chatham, NJ/Chatham), who was scoreless in two first-half minutes, tallied all of his team-high 16 points in the second half. Sophomore Chris Halkitis (New Port Richey, FL/Ridgewood) added 14 points and four assists for the Generals. Rookie Mason Herman (Martinsburg, WV/St. Maria Goretti) scored three points and had a game-high 11 rebounds.

Lawhorn scored his 19 points in 19 minutes on eight-of-14 shooting from the floor. Sophomore Jordan Snipes (Siler City, NC/Jordan-Matthews (Methodist)) scored 14 points and in his best offensive showing since his heroic 34-point showing at Randolph-Macon Jan. 31. Atkinson finished with 13 points, six steals, two blocks and three assists in 15 minutes off the bench. Sophomore Thomas Burge (Winston-Salem, NC/Glenn) added 10 points, five assists and seven boards in a solid 24 minutes of work. Rookie Andy Sharpe (Arden, NC/Carolina Day (UNC Asheville)) paced the Quakers with eight rebounds. The Quakers finished with 34 points off of 23 Washington and Lee turnovers and outscored the Generals, 21-12, in second-chance points.
