New York University jumped out to an early 36-26 lead with 5:35 left in the first half, before the Tartans went on a 24-4 run to close the half taking a ten point halftime lead, 50-40. NYU began the second half with a 12-6 run to cut the Tartans lead to 56-52 with 14:20 remaining. The Tartans would once again put a run together outscoring NYU 11-3 over the next three minutes to take a 67-55 with 11:39 left. The Violets never got closer then six the rest of the way as the Tartans went on to the 90-82 victory.
Carnegie Mellon had four players in double figures leading the way was junior Nate Maurer (Pittsburgh, PA/Linsly School)finishing with a game and season high 32 points and and five block shots. Senior Michael Divens (Trafford, PA/Penn Trafford) and junior A.J. Straub (St. Mary’s, PA/ Elk County Catholic) each turned in 18 points, as straub went 4-5 from behing the three-point arc. Divens pulled in four rebounds giving him 501 for his career making him the eighth player in school history to record 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in a career. Junior Clayton Barlow-Wilcox (Brookline, MA/Brookline) finished with 12 points and six rebounds for the Tartans.
Jeff Gilkerson led the Violets with 15 points, while Jason Boone recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Bobby Serafin was the only other Violet in double figures as he scored 11 points.
Carnegie Mellon will be back in action Friday, February 18 as they travel to St. Louis, MO to take on the Bears of Washington University. The tip is scheduled for 8:00pm.
