Thiel 78, Waynesburg 76

WAYNESBURG, Pa. — Thiel College junior guard C.J. Hunt knocked down a three-pointer with seven seconds to go in the game to push the Tomcats past Waynesburg College 78-76 Saturday evening in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) men's basketball action.

Thiel (6-17, 2-6) grabbed a six-point edge (32-26) on a lay up by freshman forward Max Slater with 4:21 to go in the first half. Beau Wilson cut the lead to one (34-33) with a jumper with just over one minute to play before senior guard Daryl Moore went one-for-two from the free throw line to give the visitors a 35-33 lead going into the break.

After a 40-40 tie early in the second the Tomcats used a 13-4 run to go up by nine (53-44) at the 12:38 mark. Junior forward Stephen Laird knocked down three three-pointers during the run.

Marc Lodovico hit a three to tie the game at 53-53 with under 11 minutes to play. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Tomcats 14-7 over the next 3:28 to go up seven (67-60) with just under seven minutes remaining.

Wilson hit a pair of free throws with a minute to play to put the Yellow Jackets up one (74-73) before freshman guard Ross Watson put Thiel up one (75-74) with 44 seconds to play.

Josh Parisi's lay up with 21 seconds to go gave Waynesburg the one-point edge (76-75) before Hunt's game-winning triple.

Moore led five Tomcats in double figures with 15 points and a career-high 11 assists. Freshman forward Joe Herrmann totaled 14 points and seven rebounds. Watson had 11 points and nine rebounds while Laird and Slater added 11 and 10, respectively.

Wilson, Jeff Nero and Ray Gillespie each had 13 to lead the Yellow Jackets.

The Tomcats return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 16 when they host PAC rival Grove City College. Tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
