Warren’s efforts, including a 7-of-11 showing from three-point range, moved him to 1,001 points for his career, marking him as the 17th men’s basketball player to reach the 1,000 point plateau at VWC. He is also the seventh in the past eight seasons to hit 1,000 for the Marlins.
It was all part of a solid team showing for the Marlins, who improved to 19-5 overall and took over second place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with a 12-5 record. It also avenged an earlier loss to Bridgewater, which fell to 16-8 overall and to 11-6 in the conference.
Virginia Wesleyan, chasing a second consecutive 20-win season, bolted out to a 13-0 lead against the Eagles and never looked back. Bridgewater never pulled the deficit under double digits once Warren hit his second three-pointer of the game to give the Marlins an 11-0 advantage.
Warren’s seven three pointers matched his career-high and moved him into elite company with former VWC standouts Tom Palombo and James Wallace. They are the only three men in Marlin history to hit seven or more triples in a game twice in their careers. Palombo holds the single-game record with nine against Roanoke College in 1989.
Sophomore Brandon Adair (Virginia Beach, VA/Princess Anne) added 16 points for the Marlins, who protected their lead throughout the game with key rebounding and alert defense. The defensive effort helped limit Bridgewater senior Ricky Easterling, the ODAC’s leading scorer, to only 9 points, his low in the conference so far this season.
VWC’s offensive efforts were aided by the passing of junior Thomas Sumpter (Hampton, VA/Bethel), who dished out 7 assists.
Ashby Tarkington led Bridgewater with 12 points. Clay Michael chipped in with eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
