Sophomore guard Kamari Williams (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) lead all scorers with 19 points on 7-for-16 shooting from the as the Anchormen improve to 15-7 overall and 8-4 in the LEC. Suffering their third loss in as many games, Huskies fall to 8-14 overall and 3-8 in conference action.
Williams, who added five rebounds and four assists, was joined in junior guard Kevin Payette (Woonsocket, R.I./Woonsocket), freshman guard Devin Yarbrough (New Haven, Conn./Hyde) and senior guard Andre Daley (Boston, Mass./Madison Park) in double-figure scoring. Payette tallied 18 points for the Anchormen and Yarbrough added 16 points on a 3-for-4 effort from three-point range while Daley chipped in with 15 points.
Senior guard Mike Franceour (Somersworth, N.H./Cheshire) and junior forward Bill Hardwick (Boothbay, Maine/Boothbay) paced the Huskies with 17 points each, while Hardwick also grabbed a game-high eight boards for Southern Maine. Senior guard Jason Levecque (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) added 14 points for the Huskies.
Ahead by five (44-39) at the halftime break, Rhode Island College used a 18-5 spurt in the first six minutes of the second half to put the Huskies into a 17-point hole, 62-45, with just under 14 minutes on the game clock. Payette scored five of his 18 points in the decisive run for Rhode Island while sophomore guard Kinsey Durgin (Greenwood, Maine/Telstar) scored four of his seven points.
Rhode Island finished the game with a 45.9 field goal shooting percentage, connecting on 34-of-74 attempts and 77.3 percent from the field goal line knocking down 17-of-22 free throws. Southern Maine shot 46.9 percent from the floor shooting 30-for-64, but only reached the free throw line nine times making 8-of-9 from the charity stripe.
The Huskies return to action Sunday, February 13 at 3 p.m. on the road at Eastern Connecticut State in a make-up game from January 22, 2005. Rhode Island College returns to action at home Tuesday, February 15 at 7:30 p.m. against Western Connecticut State.
