Yeshiva 67, SUNY-Maritime 51

Throggs Neck, NY — Senior guard Marc Lashley (Queens, NY/Holy Cross) had his best game of the season tonight in 67-51 loss to Yeshiva University. Lashley scored a team high 15 points and dished out four assists in his seventh start of the season. Yeshiva picked up it’s seventh conference win and currently find themselved in a three way tie for fourth place. Maritime is holding onto tenth place and looks like they will be facing the number seven seed in the first round of the Skyline playoffs on Monday February 21st. Depending on how things finish out this week, the Privateers would most likely be traveling to Manhattanville on the 21st, but the race is close right now it could change anytime this week.

The Privateers came out in the first half showcasing their new four corners offense that was successful again FDU-Florham earlier this week. They would set up the offense, and hold onto the ball until about 15 seconds were left on the shot clock and then execute the offense without flaw. It actually shocked the Mac’s at first, Coach Jonathan Halpert said after the game, “No one’s ever held the ball against me before.” Even a Yeshiva fan in the crowd shouted out to the Maritime bench, “are you going to play four corners the whole game”, which they replied to with a firm yes. It may not be the most entertaining offensive play, but it was effective in the early goings, although they would later go back in to their usual offensive sets later in the game.

On several occasions in the second half, Maritime was able to cut the lead to just six, but just weren’t able to get that one more needed basket to really break the game wide open. Many of their points were scoring underneath the basket as the Yeshiva defensive just had no way of stopping the Privateer guards from getting the easy lay-ins.

Junior center Robert Benton (Montgomery, AL/GW Carver) was the only other Privateer to score in double-digits with 12 points to add to his five rebounds and shooting 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Sophomore forward Roy Goldstein (Beer-Sheva, Israel/Magif Gimmel) was the high man for the Mac’s scoring 27 but shooting only 9-of-20 from the field. On the other hand, sophomore guard Ian Ribald (Dallas, TX/Yavneh) was on firing dropping seven of his nine shots all from downtown giving him a total of 22 points.

On Tuesday, the 15h, the Privateers will be traveling into Manhattan to take on the Cougars of Medgar Evers College in a men’s and women’s double-header. Also don’t forget that next Saturday, February 19 will be the last home game of the season for both the men’s and women’s teams. It will be Senior Night as both team will honor its members playing in their last season here at Maritime. The women’s game is set to being at 2pm with the men coming in at 4pm, and they will be hosting the Golden Eagles of Saint Joseph’s-Patchogue.
