McDaniel 79, Swarthmore 54

WESTMINSTER, Md. — Terror Defeats Garnet Tide

The McDaniel men’s basketball team defeated the Swarthmore Garnet Tide 79-54 on Saturday afternoon in the Gill Center.

The Terror started the game with a 13-3 run in the first six minutes of the game. Swarthmore’s Matt Kurman halted that by sinking two freebies, but McDaniel followed with an 11-2 run over the next two minutes to take a 24-7 lead with 10 minutes to go in the first half.

McDaniel would hold leads of 17 on two more occasions, with Swarthmore going on a 7-0 run to pull within 10 points at 32-22 with 2:32 left before the break. The two schools would trade baskets heading in the half, with the Terror up 40-29.

D.J. Hynes led the Terror at the half with 10 points. Josh McKay scored the only points off the bench for McDaniel, netting eight on 4 for 5 shooting from the field. McKay also pulled down five boards.

Swarthmore started the second half on a 6-1 run to pull within six points, 41-35 with 12:48 left in the game. Kyle O’Connor hit McDaniel’s first field goal of the second half to end the Swarthmore run, putting the Terror up nine 44-35.

Swarthmore finally got their act together and went on a 9-0 run to tie things up at 44-44 with 11 minutes remaining. Chris Casey led the way with five points, assisting on the other basket during that span.

The Terror would keep their composure and go on a 12-2 run to take a 56-46 lead with 5:54 to go in the contest. Swarthmore pulled within eight points at 59-51, but the Terror would put things away by finishing the game on a 20-3 run. McDaniel won by a final score of 79-54.

Swarthmore finished the game only shooting 28% from the field, with their bench making only one of 18 shots (6%).

McDaniel’s Sam Anstead (pictured above) had one of his best all-around games of his career, finishing with 15 points, nine rebounds, and a career-high six assists. McKay finished with his second career double-double, with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Swarthmore was led by Ian McCormick who finished with 17 points, 13 rebounds, and three blocks.

With the win, the Terror ups their record to 5-17, 3-12 in the Centennial Conference. Swarthmore drops to 3-19, 2-13 in the conference. The Terror returns to action when they host Franklin & Marshall on February 16. Tipoff set for 8:00 pm.
