John Carroll 86, Otterbein 73

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Oh — John Carroll gained sole possession of first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference this afternoon with an 86-73 victory against Otterbein at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.

In a battle of the two teams tied atop the Ohio Athletic Conference standings when the day began, the Blue Streaks used a 14-4 run inside of nine minutes left in the second half to deliver the decisive blow and complete the season sweep of the Cardinals.

John Carroll opened the second half with an 8-2 run to break a 30-30 halftime tie. Otterbein would not be deterred and battled back behind Dequan Owens’ three driving lay-ups to make the score 45-44 in favor of John Carroll.

The Blue Streaks went on another run, this time of the 7-0 variety, to make the score 52-44, only to have Otterbein counter with a 6-0 run of its own.

That is when the Blue Streaks made their decisive move. Demetrius Travis keyed the run by scoring six of his ten points as John Carroll pushed the lead out to 64-54 with 4:21 to play. The Cardinals never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.

John Carroll (18-4, 12-4 OAC) was led by sophomore point guard Pete Moran, who scored a career-high 25 points on the afternoon. He made 12-17 free throws in the game and was 10-12 from the charity stripe in the last three minutes of the game to secure the victory for John Carroll.

Brandon Mimes scored 23 points, of which had 17 were tallied in a first half that saw the Blue Streaks rally from an 11-point deficit to tie the contest at 30-30.

Otterbein (16-7, 11-5 OAC) was paced by senior point guard Tony Borghese’s 16 points, while Owens finished with 15 points on the day.

John Carroll shot .615 (16-26) from the field and was a perfect 4-4 from three-point range in the second half.
