Junior Andy Draayer was the star for Calvin on Saturday, scoring a career high 29 points off the bench. Draayer, a native of Denver, Colorado, hit a career high nine three point shots and also grabbed seven rebounds. The nine three point makes ranks second all-time in Calvin history behind Todd Henink, who made 12 in 1990.
On Wednesday night against Olivet, Draayer scored 25 points, which combined with Saturday's game gives him a week's total of 54 points in two games.
"Andy has had his shot lately," said Coach Keven VandeStreek, "He has been a tremendous weapon for us off our bench, and he is heating up at the right time too."
Calvin's bench out-scored Alma's by a 47-14 margin. VandeStreek was proud of the complete effort from all his reserves. "We've had some tough injuries lately and different guys have been able to step in and perform well when we really need them."
Senior Dan Aultman had great game also, scoring 19 points and grabbing seven rebounds. At one point in the second half, Aultman scored 10 straight points for the Knights. Also scoring in double-digits for Calvin was junior Joel Hoekstra who had 11 points to go with five rebounds and five assists and senior Ricky Shilts who also had 11 points.
Calvin pulled ahead late in the first half on the streak by Aultman and 14 points by Draayer. The Knights led at the half by a 51-37 score.
The Knights came out firing in the outset of the second half, hitting six consecutive three-pointers, four by Draayer and one apiece from Hoekstra and Shilts. That led to an insurmountable 82-52 Calvin lead with under seven minutes left to play.
On the day, Calvin shot 52.2 percent from the field, including 47.1(16 of 34) percent from behind the arc. Alma was held to 41.9 percent shooting from the field, but only 34.3 percent in the second half as Calvin pulled away. Calvin out-rebounded Alma 43-24 and 24-7 in the first half. Both teams had 13 turnovers for the game.
Other notable scorers for Calvin included sophomore Josh Meckes who had five points to go with seven rebounds and two resounding blocks. Senior Josh Vriesman and sophomore Eric DeVries each contributed five points while senior Brad Sall chipped in four points starting his fourth game in place of junior Kyle Trewhella who returned and saw some time of the bench.
With the loss, Alma falls to 5-7 in the MIAA and 10-12 overall. The Scots were led in scoring by Anthony Jones with 20 points and Mark Barnes with 11 points. Jones is leading the MIAA in scoring, aiming for his second consecutive scoring title.
Calvin is back in action on Wednesday evening when they renew their rivalry with the Flying Dutvhmen of Hope College. It will be the 156th meeting between the storied schools. Tip-off is set for 7:30pm at the Civic Center in Holland. This meeting marks the last time the two schools will play each other in the Civic Center, as Hope's new facility will be ready next year.
