Blackburn 79, Maryville (Mo.) 76

CARLINVILLE, Ill. — The Maryville University men's basketball team fell to 6-5 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) play with a 76-79 overtime loss to Blackburn College (IL). The Saints are now in sole possession of third place and have an overall record of 9-13, while Blackburn is 14-8 overall and in second place in the conference at 8-3.
After hitting only 8-of-25 (.320) from the field in the first half, Maryville had a second half offensive surge to overcome their five-point halftime deficit and force overtime. The Saints hit 10-of-19 (.526) from the floor in the second half, including 2-of-4 (.500) from three-point range, and they hit 20-of-24 (.833) from the charity stripe.
In overtime, the Beavers scored first and held the lead for the entire five minutes. Maryville junior Matt Regan would hit a three-pointer with six seconds on the clock to cut the lead to just one point, but after a Saints foul, Blackburn's Luka Djedovic would sink two freebies to put his squad back up by three. Regan's last second effort to hit a trey failed, as Maryville suffered their first overtime loss of the season.
Regan finished with 13 points and was 3-of-6 (.500) from behind the arc. Junior Ryan Klein scored a team-high 15 points for Maryville, while shooting 11-of-13 (.846) from the free throw line. Senior Andrew Hulbert sank 9-of-10 (.900) from the charity stripe and recorded 12 points, three assists and three steals for the game, while fellow senior Marcus Henderson added 11 points in the effort.
Djedovic led the Beavers with a game-high 21 points, and Nick Barnett added 20 points and nine rebounds. Also scoring in double figures for Blackburn were Corey Waters and John Essington with 14 and 13 points respectively.
Maryville will return to action on Wednesday, February 16, when they host the Highlanders of MacMurray College (IL) in a 6:00 pm SLIAC matchup.
