Christopher Newport 71, Averett 64

DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men’s basketball team allowed Christopher Newport University to dig out of a 20-point second half deficit and take a 71-64 win over the Cougars Saturday at the Grant Center. It was the second home loss for the Cougars this season.

Averett (10-11, 5-5 USA South) led 43-23 with 15:31 remaining. However, CNU (15-7, 5-4 USA South) answered with a 17-2 run to trim the Averett lead to only five with 9:45 showing on the game clock. Under four minutes later, CNU took a 52-51 advantage and never relinquished the lead. As the Cougars tried to extend the game, CNU missed several free throws, but Roderic Carey of the Captains seemed to always find the carom and sealed the CNU victory.

In the first half, Averett led 16-12 with eight minutes remaining. From that point until halftime, the Cougars jumped on the Captains and took a 31-28 advantage into the intermission. Jeremy Haskins had 11 first half points to lead the Cougars.

Carey led CNU with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Blake Brookman followed with 15 points. Haskins led the Cougar attack with 19 points and eight rebounds. Lymon Gregory added 12 and Sterling Williams contributed with 11 points and six assists in the Cougar loss.

Averett returns to action on Sunday at 4 p.m. with a USA South Conference match up against Shenandoah. The Hornets were also losers on Saturday, falling at Ferrum by a 69-65 count.
