Rochester 57, New York University 55

ROCHESTER, NY — Jeff Gilkerson’s short followup spun in and out just before the final buzzer and the University of Rochester held on to defeat New York University, 57-55, at the Louis Alexander Palestra here tonight.

Rochester won its eighth straight game and 13th in the last 14. The Yellowjackets are 9-1 in the UAA, 18-3 overall. Rochester has a 2.5-game lead over runnerup Carnegie Mellon, which lost at home to Brandeis, 73-72. Rochester hosts Brandeis at 11:30 am Sunday.

NYU is 3-7 UAA, 13-8 overall.

Seth Hauben led the Yellowjackets with 26 points and a team-high eight rebounds, raising his total to 1,001 rebounds. He became the second UR player in history to grab more than 1,000 rebounds. Jeff Juron scored 10 points.

Daniel Falcon led the Violets with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Jason Boone had 11 points, including two emphatic dunks, and Gilkerson had 10.

Hauben hit a runner in the lane, then Onyiriuka made a twisting layup and was fouled by Boone. He missed the free throw. Hauben grabbed the rebound and missed, but Onyiriuka dunked Hauben’s miss and UR had a 55-48 lead with 4:20 to play.

The lead was still seven, 57-50, after Juron’s layup with 2:25 to go. Falcon scored inside. After Hauben missed the front end of a one-and-one, Jared Kildare drove for a layup, cutting the UR lead to 57-54, with 1:04 left. Boone sank one of two free throws with 26 seconds left (57-55).

Tim Brackney missed a one-and-one for UR at 0:25 and Boone rebounded. The Violets called time with 13 seconds remaining. With seven seconds left. James Janeczek missed a three-pointer from right wing. Gilkerson grabbed the rebound and put up a soft follow that hit the back of the rim, was halfway down, and bounced out. Neither team could control the rebound as time expired.
