Amherst 78, Bates 59

LEWISTON, Maine (Feb. 11, 2005) – — The Amherst College men’s basketball team improved its winning streak to 14 games Friday, beating Bates, 78-59, at Alumni Gymnasium. Ranked No. 4 in the latest D3hoops.com national poll, the Lord Jeffs are 21-1 and 8-0 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference.

Four players finished in double-digits for Amherst, with Andrew Schiel ’05 (Wayne, Pa.) scoring 28 and grabbing a team-high five rebounds. John Bedford ’06 (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored 15 points; John Casnocha ’06 (San Francisco, Calif.) had 13; Russell Lee ’05 (Lorton, Va.) finished with 12.

Trailing 42-26 at halftime, Bates pulled within seven three times in the second half. Amherst, however, went on a 15-4 run in the final five minutes.

Rob Stockwell ’07 (Temple, N.H.) led Bates with a team-high 16 points and six boards. Elliott Linsley ’05 (Murrieta, Calif.) scored 12 with a game-high seven rebounds; he also had four blocks and three steals. Brian Gerrity ’05 (Augusta, Maine) finished with 11 points.

The Bobcats are 16-7 and 5-3 in NESCAC.

Bates will host Trinity tomorrow at 3 p.m.; Amherst travels to Tufts for a 3 p.m. start.
