St. Thomas 74, Bethel 57

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Senior guard Neal Anderson sank five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 24 points and the host Tommies (15-7 overall, 15-3 MIAC) clinched a top-two MIAC finish with Wednesday's 74-57 victory over the Royals (15-7, 10-7) in St. Paul.

St. Thomas remained one-half game behind first-place Gustavus, a 58-57 home-court winner over 10th-place St. Olaf.

Senior Tim Gilbert scored 16 points and senior Travis Jones had 15 points for the Royals, who missed 20 of their first 21 shots and fell behind 28-3. Bethel shot 31%(19-of-62) on the game.

For UST, sophomore center Isaac Rosefelt had 21 rebounds and 11 points, soph guard Bryan Schnettler had 12 points and five assists off the bench, and junior Danny Peterson scored 12. Rosefelt had 44 rebounds in the season sweep of Bethel.

The Toms, who've won four in a row, improved to 8-1 at home. They can secure a first-round playoff bye and top-two seed with one more win or one Carleton loss.

Peterson scored 11 of his 12 points in the opening 7:00 and helped St. Thomas race to a 28-3 lead with 7:00 to go in the first half.

Bethel used an 18-9 run to pull within 37-21 but UST's Bryan Schnettler made a 3-pointer in the final 30 seconds to push the halftime lead back to 19 at 40-21. The Royals never got closer then 10 in the second half.

UST shot 52% from the field in the first half and 47% (28-of-60) on the game. The Toms outrebounded Bethel 46-34.

Anderson, who had a streak of 36 MIAC games scoring in double figures end Monday, had 14 of his 24 points in the second half.
