St. Mary's (Md.) 74, Gallaudet 65

St. Mary's City, MD — Freshman center Jerome Habel scored a team-high 23 points and added a game-high 13 rebounds with three blocked shots in leading the St. Mary's College men's basketball team to a 74-65 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) overtime victory over Gallaudet University on Wednesday evening. The game was the first men's basketball contest held in the new Athletics and Recreation Center Arena at St. Mary's College.

The Seahawks (10-11, 6-5 CAC) scored the first basket of the contest to take a 2-0 lead on a floater from senior forward Jeffrey Turner on the game's opening possession. That would be the last time the Seahawks saw the lead until the overtime period. Gallaudet (6-15, 1-9 CAC) held the lead for 37:38 of the 40 minutes in regulation, only to fall in the overtime period.

The Seahawks sent the game into overtime when Habel nailed a three-pointer from the right baseline with 40 seconds remaining. The Bison called a timeout and junior forward Frank Jackson missed a 10-footer in the paint with 15 seconds remaining. The Seahawks called timeout with ten seconds left to set up the final possession, but senior forward John Dewey missed a three-pointer at the end of regulation, sending the game into the extra period.

Junior guard Brendan Stern put the Bison on top with a field goal 32 seconds into the overtime period, but junior guard Ben Stewart answered with a three-pointer for the Seahawks to give them a 64-63 lead with 3:42 remaining in the contest. The Seahawks would not relinquish the lead from that point on, connecting on all six of their free throw attempts in the final minute to seal the victory.

Junior guard Robert Haney Jr. led the Bison with a game-high 28 points and 12 rebounds. Jackson added 21 points and five rebounds, while junior center Bradley Miller added 12 points and five rebounds before fouling out of the contest.

Habel led the Seahawks with 23 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Freshman guard T.J. Jordan chipped in with 12 points, with Turner and Stewart each posting ten points. Sophomore guard Dan Engelstad added nine points with a game-high 11 assists in the victory.

The Seahawks will return to action on Saturday, February 9, when they travel to York College (PA) for another CAC contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
