St. John's 68, Macalester 51

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — Junior post Paul Henrichs had 18 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore post Craig Schafer added 12 points and eight rebounds as Saint John’s University defeated Macalester College 68-51 on Wednesday, Feb. 9, at Sexton Arena on the SJU campus.

Macalester’s only lead of the game came at 5-4. After the Scots shot 25 percent from the field, SJU led 28-16 at halftime. Macalester cut the lead to 33-29 with 14:36 left in the game, but could get no closer.

For Macalester, freshman forward Tom Conboy had a game-high 19 points, along with six rebounds. Conboy made 10-of-11 free throw attempts. Sophomore guard Lars Johnson added 10 points and six rebounds. Macalester only shot 29.2 percent (14-of-48) from the field and 21.7 percent (5-of-23) from behind the three-point line. Senior guard Erik Jackson, who entered the game averaging 18.3 points per game, was held to only six points.

SJU shot 47.3 percent (26-of-55) from the field and made 4-of-11 (36.4 percent) three-point baskets. SJU made 12-of-16 free throw attempts. The Johnnies only committed 10 turnovers in the win.

SJU’s 17-point win is the largest of the season. SJU improves to 8-14 overall and 6-11 in the MIAC, while Macalester fell to 10-13 overall and 9-9 in the MIAC.
