JERSEY CITY, NJ — MARK WASHINGTON SCORES HIS 1000TH CAREER POINT ON HIS 100TH CAREER THREE, AS NJCU BLASTS BRIARCLIFFE BY 42, 91-49

Junior swingman MARK WASHINGTON (East Orange, NJ/West Side) became the 25th player in New Jersey City University men’s basketball history to score 1000 career points, and did so by draining his 100th three-pointer, as NJCU routed an opponent by 30 or more for the fourth time this season, with a 91-49 victory over Briarcliffe College, Wednesday at the John J. Moore Athletic and Fitness Center.

NJCU (15-7) has won 11-of-14 overall, and the 42-point victory marked the 38th time NJCU has ever won by 30 or more points, the benchmark for a true lopsided victory. It was also NJCU’s 29th victory by 40 or more, and it occurred on a night when the Gothic Knight women opened the doubleheader with a 44-point win, as the two clubs combined for a pair of routs by a collective 86 on Wednesday evening.

The loss for Briarcliffe (6-22) was its fourth straight. It was the first meeting between the schools in men’s basketball.

Washington led NJCU with 11 points (5-9) and dished four assists in only 16 minutes of action He swished a three-pointer from the left wing at 3:21 of the first period to give NJCU a 25-point, 44-19 margin, and received a standing ovation from the home crowd. His 100th three-pointer makes him only the fifth men’s player and sixth between the men and women’s program to reach the milestone, and now stands 25 shy of matching the all-time school record.

On an evening where no player logged more than 16 minutes and all 15 who dressed played at least 10, the final box score demonstrated a balance scoring attack. Freshman point guard RAJAHN JONES (Roselle, NJ/Pocono Mountain, PA) had 10 points (4-8) with two three-pointers, and a game-high five assists.

Sophomore center ABRAHAM WILLIAMS (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) and freshman shooting guard NAMREH WHITE (Plainfield, NJ/Smith) contributed eight points each, while senior shooting guard JAVIER RODRIGUEZ (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) and junior forward/center JAMES KAISER (South Orange, NJ/Columbia) chipped in eight points apiece.

Freshman center Michael Manusama (Merrick, NY) paced the Seahawks with a game-high 16 points (8-14) in 37 minutes. Freshman guard Brandon Feliciano (Roosevelt, NY) ended with 10, but shot 3-of-15 (2-8 3FG) and had seven
turnovers.

The Knights dominated the glass, posting a +29 margin in rebounding, 57-28, highlighted by a 27-7 difference on the offensive boards. That allowed NJCU to own a 31-9 margin in second chance points.

NJCU jumped out to a 15-4 lead, and led by 30, 51-21 at the half. The 42-point final was the largest lead of the game, having occurred three times during the second half.

NJCU’s reserves dominated the visitor bench, 53-8, and the Knights translated 21 Seahawk giveaways into a 28-16 margin in points off turnovers. NJCU, which never trailed, committed only 12 turnovers. The Knights shot .410 overall (32-78), and nailed 11 three-pointers. BC was 18-of-53 from the floor (.340).

NJCU returns to action on Saturday, February 12 at 7pm when it hosts William Paterson University in game two of a 2005 Homecoming/Green and Gold Days doubleheader in Jersey City.
