Maryville led 35-26 at halftime, and they maintained that lead for a majority of the second half. Westminster battled at both ends of the court and finally tied the game at 69-69 with 1:14 remaining on the clock. The Bluejays' Andrew Buxton would hit a three-point shot with :37 seconds left to give his team the advantage.
Two consecutive three-point shots failed to find the bottom of the net for the Saints, but after an offensive rebound on the second missed shot, head coach Matt Rogers called a timeout to set up a play for his squad. Maryville came out poised and ready to fire, as senior Marcus Henderson hit a clutch three-pointer from the top left of the key to again tie the game with just 11 seconds on the clock.
After a Westminster timeout, Maryville played tough-nosed defense and deflected a pass out of bounds on the defensive end. The Bluejays kept possession, and with just 1.7 seconds remaining, Buxton found Krautmann on the inbounds for the baseline jumper at the buzzer.
Senior Andrew Hulbert recorded a season-high 18 points to lead the Saints offensively. He shot 6-of-9 (.667) from the floor, 3-of-3 (1.000) from behind the arc and sank 3-of-5 (.600) from the charity stripe. Juniors Matt Regan and Ben Hebl each finished with 10 points, while Regan also dished out a game-high five assists, grabbed five rebounds, recorded four steals and tallied one block shot. Fellow junior Ryan Klein chipped in with seven points and a game-high seven rebounds.
Krautmann, along with teammates Adam Froidl and David McDorman scored 15 points a piece to lead Westminster to the upset victory. Krautmann also added four rebounds, four assists and two blocks, while Buxton chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds.
Despite the loss, Maryville still remains in third place in the conference standings. Rogers and his squad will look to improve on their 6-4 SLIAC record this Saturday, February 12, when they travel to Carlinville, IL, to take on the second place Battlin' Beavers of Blackburn College. Tip-off is 3:00 pm.
