Hampden-Sydney 81, Guilford 78

GREENSBORO, NC — Sophomore guard Mike Edwards (Richmond, VA Steward School) scored 20 of his game-high 23 points in the second half and overtime, including a three-pointer with two seconds left in regulation which sent the contest into an extra period, leading Hampden-Sydney (15-8, 10-6 ODAC) to an 81-78 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) overtime win over Guilford. The win completed a regular season sweep by the Tigers over the Quakers (13-10, 8-8 ODAC) and marked Guilford's second overtime loss of the year to Hampden-Sydney.
The Tigers started quickly behind the play of Drew Prehmus (Roanoke, VA/Salem) taking an early eight-point lead only to see the lead vanish midway through the first half as Kerry Atkinson (Raleigh, NC/Wakefield) rallied the Quakers to take a brief 20-19 advantage with a 12-3 run. The Tigers answered with a run of their own, taking a 36-31 advantage into halftime.
Guilford took control in the second half grabbing a 45-44 lead midway through the period. The Quakers built their lead to as large as nine points with six minutes left in the half, only to watch the Tigers chip away and take a 64-63 lead behind the free throw shooting of Edwards and Mladen Cvijanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/Miller School (VA)). Guilford regained the lead and had a four point lead with less than a minute to play, but three-of-six shooting of the free throw line down the stretch opened the door for Edward's last second basket.
Edwards was a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line and converted Hampden-Sydney's final four free throws during the last minute of overtime to seal the victory.
Guilford was led by junior Genaro Lawhorn (Greensboro, NC/Oak Ridge Military Academy) who tallied 11 of his 17 points in the second half. He was joined by fellow teammates Atkinson, Jamel Taylor (Palm Bay, FL/Brevard Christian), and Ben Strong (Chapel Hill, NC/Chapel Hill) who chipped in 15, 11, and 10 points respectively.
The Quakers return to action on the road Saturday (2/12) versus ODAC-rival Roanoke at 4:30 p.m. Guilford lost to the Maroons earlier this year, 79-77, in Greensboro. The Tigers have a 2:00 p.m. league contest at home versus top-seeded Randolph-Macon Saturday (2/12).
