GROVE CITY, Pa. — Freshman reserve guard Jered Gamble and sophomore forward Jeff Nero each scored 20 points as the Waynesburg College men's basketball dropped its fifth-straight game, losing 93-79 to Grove City on Wednesday night. Gamble scored a career-high 20 points against the Wolverines in a season-high 21 minutes off the bench. Gamble, who has appeared in all 22 games this season, entered the game averaging 3.1 points per game before recording his first double-figure game of his career.
Nero, who resumed his starting role after two games off the bench, scored 20 points on 7-of-14 attempts from the field. He made 6 of 12 three-pointers in the loss before fouling out in the second half. Nero has scored 20-plus points four times this season, reached double digits 13 times and ranks second on the team with a 12.1 points per game average.
Sophomore reserve guard Chris Moore continued his strong play, finishing with a season and career-high 15 points, including shooting 4 of 7 from beyond the arc. Moore has netted a combined 25 points off the bench in the last two games
For the second consecutive game, Waynesburg shot 47 percent from three-point range (16 of 34). Gamble, Nero and Moore combined to make 14-of-24 attempts (58.3 percent) from beyond the arc.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the opening four minutes of the game and would feature a 21-point lead (38-17) with five minutes remaining in the first half.
WC (8-14, 2-5) closed out the first half on a 14-8 run, before GCC stretched its lead to 27 points (63-36) with nearly 15 minutes left in the game.
Grove City scored 42 of its 93 points from within the paint and featured five players in double figures. Shawn Carr came off the bench to score a game-high 21 points, while senior center Phil Bushre posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Waynesburg committed 20 turnovers, which Grove City converted into 24 points. The Jackets also committed 28 fouls that sent the Wolverines to the free-throw line 36 times, where they shot just 61 percent (22 of 36).
The Yellow Jackets return to the hardwood on Saturday, Jan. 12 when they host Thiel College for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff. Waynesburg won this season's first meeting, 83-63, behind a career-high 22 points from freshman Josh Parisi, who posted a team-high eight rebounds against Grove City.
