The early portions of the game were very evenly played as the teams were tied at 13 with 10:53 remaining in the first half. The Spartans then hit the Cardinals with a 13-3 spurt that gave the Spartans a 26-16 lead. The Spartans eventually pushed the lead to 11 before taking a 33-24 lead to the intermission. A lead at the half is usually a good sign for YCP as they are now 13-0 when heading to the break with a lead.
The Spartans were outstanding defensively in the first half as they held the Cardinals to 37% shooting from the field while the green and white converted 60.9% of their attempts from the floor.
The second half saw the green and white weather a few Catholic runs but the Spartans didn’t wilt. York’s lead was trimmed to six twice in the first five minutes of the half but the Spartans answered each of Catholic’s big shots with big shots of their own. The Spartans built the lead to 14 twice before settling for the 10 point victory.
Junior Brandon Bushey led the Spartans with 14 points while he added five assists and one blocked shot. Senior Ben Seibert continued his outstanding play as he had 11 points, eight rebounds, and a career-high tying five assists. Sophomore Brad Zerfing was the third Spartan in double figures as he had 10 points and four assists. Junior Kenny Fass added nine points while fellow junior Paddy Leeadded six points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Mike Wasilenko led the Cardinals with 14 points, four assists, and three steals. Pat Satalin chipped in 11 hard-earned points while Scott Fumai contributed nine points and seven rebounds. Matt Spierenburg pulled down a game-high tying eight rebounds while the Cardinals’ leading scorer, Shane Sowden, had five points and five rebounds before fouling out with 6:27 left.
The Spartans played tremendous defense all evening as they held the Cardinals to 37.7% shooting from the floor and 31.6% from beyond the arc. York converted 52% of their attempts from the floor but just 23.1% of their attempts from distance.
Neither team was very good from the free throw line as Catholic shot 52.4% (11-21) from the line while York made 60.0% (12-20) of their shots from the free throw line. The 60% accuracy mark ties the season low for free throw percentage for the Spartans.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they host St. Mary’s College in a key CAC contest. Game time is set for 2:00 pm at Wolf Gym.
