Bethany 89, Washington and Jefferson 64

BETHANY, W.Va. — The brother duo of Matt and Mike Drahos combined for 40 points as Bethany shot 55 percent (33-of-60) from the field en route to an 89-64 victory over Washington & Jefferson in PAC men’s basketball action on Wednesday evening at Hummel Fieldhouse.

The Bison (19-3, 6-1 PAC) scored the first 10 points of the game, but W&J responded with 10 of the next 12 to make it a 12-10 BC advantage at the 12:02 mark.

Bethany ripped off 10 more unanswered points to assume a 22-10 lead at the 8:42 mark, but the Bison could not shake the Presidents as a lay-up by sophomore guard Jon Koch (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) trimmed the lead to 26-22 five minutes later.

The Bison scored the final five points of the first half and headed to the locker rooms with a 37-25 lead.

Bethany then took control early in the second half as it stretched its lead to 17 points. The Presidents brought the lead back to 10 points (62-52) after a jumper by freshman center Tony Lewis (Mayfield Hts., Ohio/Orange), but BC scored 27 of the final 39 points to run away with the victory.

Matt Drahos finished with a game-high 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Mike Drahos added 19 points, five rebounds and four assists. Scott Mezyk rounded out the double-figure scorers with 16 markers.

Sophomore guard Brandon Studer (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley) led the Presidents with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Lewis made 5-of-6 shots and finished with 10 points.

The Presidents shot 43 percent (23-of-53), but committed 20 turnovers. Bethany also out-rebounded the Presidents by a 34-28 margin.

W&J (6-16, 3-4 PAC) hosts Grove City on Saturday afternoon for a 3:00 pm conference contest.
