Wooster 97, Allegheny 61

MEADVILLE, Pa. — Bolstered by 57 percent shooting and a 47-27 rebounding advantage, third-ranked Wooster (21-1, 12-1) came away with a 97-61 road victory over the Allegheny College men’s basketball team (8-13, 5-8) Wednesday night.

A three-pointer by freshman guard Quinn O’Brien at the 14:44 mark brought the Gators within a bucket at 11-9. The rest of the game would be controlled by the Scots, who tore off a 17-2 burst, highlighted by three straight baskets from guard James Cooper, to surge out to a 28-11 advantage. The Wooster lead stood at 50-30 going into halftime, as the visitors shot 62 percent (18-29) in the opening 20 minutes.

Allegheny was led by sophomore guard Casey McCloskey’s 11 first half points. Wooster’s center Matt Schlingman countered with 14 markers.

The second half was no better for the Gators, as they shot just 30 percent (9-30) and never moved closer than 20 points. Freshman guard Greg Richards was a bright spot, as he drained a pair of triples but the Scots proved to be too much, as they finished the game with 62 points in the paint.

McCloskey totaled 17 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals in the defeat. Freshman guard Bill Babe went 9-11 from the foul line as he tallied 11.

Wooster had five players reach double figures, led by Schlingman’s 22. Guard Kyle Witucky scored 13, while forward Tim Vandervaart just missed a double-double with nine points and 14 rebounds.

The Gators head out on the road for the final time in the regular season on Saturday when they travel to Ohio Wesleyan University. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
