New England College 66, University of New England 65

BIDDEFORD, Maine — First-year guard Ryan Jaziri (Norwich, Conn.) made two free throws with three seconds remaining to give New England College a 66-65 win over the University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference men's basketball action at the Campus Center.

With his team trailing by one, Jaziri drove the lane and was fouled when he pulled up for a 15-footer. He sank the first free throw, then calmly buried the next after UNE had called a timeout.

UNE had a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but a 3-point attempt bounced off the front of the rim.

The Nor'easters roared back in the second half, rallying from a 17-point deficit (53-36) with less than 16 minutes remaining. UNE took the lead at 61-60 on a 3-pointer by junior Nick Farynaz (Gray, Maine) at the 4:29 mark.

After Isaac Stickney (Rumford, Maine) converted a layup to push UNE's advantage to 63-60, NEC first-year forward Kingsley Onyechi (Lowell, Mass.) made a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to one.

Junior Matt McManus' (Cumberland, R.I.) finger roll as the shot clock expired pushed the Nor'easters' lead back up to three (65-62) with 1:49 remaining. Sophomore Patrick Quinn (Holbrook, N.Y.) sank two free throws on the ensuing possession as NEC closed the gap back to one.

Neither team could convert on their next two possessions, setting up Jaziri's game-winning foul shots.

Jaziri led the Pilgrims (11-9, 3-8 CCC) with 15 points, while first-year forward Kelly Coder (Exeter, N.H.) scored 14. Onyechi finished with 12 points and 16 rebounds.

McManus netted a game-high 19 points for the Nor'easters. Junior Mark Oliver (Gloucester, Mass.) had 15 points and Farynaz scored 14, including four 3-pointers.

UNE (6-14, 2-10), which dropped its fourth straight contest, will look to return to the win column on Thursday when it plays host to Saint Joseph's College in a non-conference game. The Pilgrims take on Gordon College that same day.
