The victory in the final non-conference game of the year for Tufts put them at 14-8 overall. They finished 8-7 against non-league foes with their third win in a row. The young Nighthawks lost their 10th in a row and dropped to 2-17 overall. Freshman Walky Magloire (Waltham, MA) scored a game-high 20 points to lead the visitors.
The Jumbos scored the first eight points of the game and led 22-6 mid-way into the first half. They couldn’t quite shake Newbury, which was within nine points, 27-18, with 6:26 to go until halftime. With 2:22 on the clock the Tufts lead was 10, 30-20. The Jumbos then scored the final 13 points of the first half to lead 43-20 at the break. Three three-pointers by freshman Ryan O’Keefe (Everett, MA) paved the way. Martin had 11 points and nine rebounds at the half, while Magloire had 10 points for Newbury.
The Tufts lead slipped below 20 points early in the second half, but not for long. It hit 30, 62-32, on free throws by junior Brian Fitzgerald (Bedford, NH) at 12:59, and got as high as 38 points, 95-57, on a three-pointer by freshman Pat Sullivan (Bedford, MA) at 2:07.
Tufts coach Bob Sheldon was able to go deep into his bench early. Both junior Casey D’Annolfo (West Hartford, CT) and freshman Jimmy Edgerton (Newton, MA) scored the first points of their seasons and careers in the game. Edgerton finished with six points on two three-pointers and D’Annolfo added two assists to his four points.
All 13 Jumbos played and scored in the game. Fitzgerald had six points and seven rebounds in 10 minutes played. Sullivan hit all three of his shots for seven points. Sophomore Jason Grauer (New York, NY) submitted a productive seven points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals in 15 minutes. O’Keefe scored 15 and sophomore guard David Shepherd (Grantham, NH) had nine assists to go with seven points. Tufts shot 52.4 percent (43/82) and won the battle of the boards, 50-39. They earned assists on 30 of 43 baskets.
Newbury season-leading scorer Arch Mitchell (Sudbury, MA) scored 17 points with five rebounds and three assists. Junior captain Matthew Stanton (Lynnfield, MA) had a solid all-around effort with seven points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. The Nighthawks were 25 for 71 from the floor (35.2%), including 4 for 15 from downtown.
