ERIE, Penn. — Despite a furious rally that saw the Hilbert College men’s basketball team cut a once 23 point lead down to five, it wasn’t enough as the Hawks dropped a road conference game to Penn State Behrend, 69-54, on Tuesday night. The loss drops Hilbert College to 8-13 overall, and 6-8 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. Penn State Behrend improves to 15-6 overall, and a conference-best 12-3 AMCC record.

Penn State Behrend took control early, and connected on five three-pointers in the first ten minutes of the game, taking a quick 27-4 lead. The Hawks would not quit, however, and went on a 14-4 run to end the half trailing 31-18.

In the second stanza, Hilbert came out swinging, and a Sam Gioia three-pointer from the right wing cut the lead to five with 11:43 left in the game. The Behrend Lions responded with a 10-0 run, and behind 6’7” Kevin Buczynski’s strong inside play, took control of the game.

Gioia finished with a game-high 17 points to lead Hilbert. Glen Ufland came off the bench and contributed 12 points on four three-pointers. Buczynski led the Behrend Lions with 16 points on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting.

Hilbert continues its conference schedule with a road game against the University of Pitt-Greensburg on Friday, February 11. The game is scheduled for 8:00 PM.
