Christopher Newport 81, North Carolina Wesleyan 69

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — Christopher Newport used a 17-0 second half run to defeat NC Wesleyan, 81-69, Wednesday night in the Freeman Center.

CNU, trailing 39-32, with 19:17, began its 17-0 run on a three-pointer on Brandon Brooks. The Captains lead 49-32 with 14:26 left before the Bishops scored again.

The Captains trailed at halftime, 34-32. Three free throws by Lenny Hall put NC Wesleyan on top with one second left before intermission. CNU shot 13-of-37 (35%) from the field, 4-of-14 (29%) on three's and 2-of-2 from the free throw line.

The Bishops shot 11-of-34 (32%) from the floor, 4-of-8 on three's and 8-of-10 from the charity stripe.

In the second half, the Captains torched the nets, hitting 52% (16-of-31) from the field, 8-of-16 on three's and 9-of-12 from the free throw line. CNU held the Bishops to 12-of-34 (35%) shooting, 3-of-10 on three's and 8-of-10 from the charity stripe.

For the game, NC Wesleyan shot 23-of-68 (34%) from the field, 7-of-18 (39%) on three's and 16-of-20 (80%) from the free throw line. CNU shot 29-of-68 (43%) from the floor, 12-of-30 (40%) on three's and 11-of-14 (79%) from the charity stripe.

The Bishops were lead by Lenny Hall with 28 points and seven rebounds. Ramone Spears finished with 13 points and six rebounds, Richard Carr and Oliver Brown had 10 points each.

The Captains were lead by Jeremy Romeo with 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-8 on three's, seven blocks and five assists. Korey Lewis finished with 15 points off the bench, Jordan Short had 13 points, also off the bench and Roderic Carey added 10 points.

The Bishops are now 8-13 overall and 1-7 in the USA South. CNU improves to 14-7 overall and 4-4 in the USA South.

The Captains return to action this weekend as they travel to Averett with tip-off set for 4 pm.
