St. John's 59, St. Mary's (Minn.) 56

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — Saint John’s University sophomore post Craig Schafer had a career-high 21 points as the Johnnies defeated Saint Mary’s University 59-56 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Monday, Feb. 7, at Sexton Arena on the SJU campus in Collegeville, Minn. The game marked a homecoming for former SJU player and assistant coach Mike Trewick, who is in his first season as head coach at Saint Mary’s in Winona, Minn.

Saint Mary’s never led in the game. SJU’s biggest first-half lead was 27-18 with 4:53 left in the half. The Johnnies led 31-25 at intermission. The second half saw SJU build a 13-point lead twice in the first four minutes of the half. After leading 51-40 with 10:02 left, SJU saw the Cardinals go on a 16-6 run to cut the lead to 57-56 with 1:02 remaining. Saint Mary’s had a chance to take its first lead with the score still at 57-56, but Jeff Tendall missed a tough lay-up with 13 seconds remaining.

Junior post Paul Henrichs and sophomore point Matt Ohme each had 11 points, while Henrichs collected eight rebounds for the Johnnies. SJU shot 43.9 percent (25-of-57) from the field and only made 1-of-10 three-point attempts.

Junior forward Dan Kloak had 11 points, while junior guard Jeff Tendall and sophomore forward Michael Batterman each had 10 points for the Cardinals. The Cardinals shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the field and 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from the three-point line. Saint Mary’s only went to the free throw line three times, making two. Each team had 32 rebounds.

SJU has now won 37 straight games against Saint Mary’s in Collegeville, dating back to the 1968 season.

SJU improves to 7-14 overall and 5-11 in the MIAC, while Saint Mary’s falls to 4-17 overall and 3-13 in the MIAC.
