Villa Julie 78, Gallaudet 68

WASHINGTON, DC — Despite career-highs of 20 points each from junior forward Bradley Miller (Boston, MA) and rookie guard Sekoe White (Lexington, KY), the Gallaudet University men’s basketball team fell to visiting non-league foe Villa Julie College on Monday night. Junior forward Anthony Fitzgerald (Baltimore, MD) paced the Mustangs with game-highs of 24 points and 19 rebounds.

The visitors took an early 20-15 lead when first-year center Kerry Dugan (Sparks, MD) hit a shot from the low post. The Bison countered when White torched the Mustangs for eight straight points, giving the hosts a 23-20 lead. However, Villa Julie answered right back when sophomore guard Chris Warren (Largo, MD) caught fire and knocked down a trio of trifectas in just over a two minute span, giving the Mustangs a 33-25 lead. The Bison cut into the deficit and Villa Julie led 37-33 heading into halftime.

Senior forward Wade Henninger (Baltimore, MD) drained a jumper from inside the paint, extending the visitors advantage to nine early in the second stanza. Gallaudet retaliated with a 17-8 run capped off with a White three-point play, giving the hosts a 51-48 lead with 12:54 left on the clock. Shortly thereafter, junior forward Robert Haney Jr. (Ft. Wayne, IN) – who tallied all 17 of his points in the second half – hit a layup, stretching the gap to 53-49. However, Fitzgerald was simply too much for the Bison. The 6’5” power forward used all of his muscle and guided the Mustangs to a late run that would seal the 78-68 win.

Gallaudet junior forward Frank Jackson (Detroit, MI) – in foul trouble most of the game – finished with seven points, six boards, and three assists, while classmate guard Brendan Stern (Santa Fe, NM) chipped in with six dimes. Henninger tallied 18 points, while sophomore guard Steven Segears (Lanham, MD) added a solid 16-point performance for Villa Julie. With the loss, Gallaudet drops to 6-14 overall, while the Mustangs improve to 13-7.

The Bison return to action at CAC rival St. Mary’s on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
