Elms 63, Becker 50

CHICOPEE, Ma. — Elms College freshman forward Amy Kasala (Dalton, MA) registered her team-leading eighth double-double of the year with 17 points and 13 rebounds, and junior forward Danielle Dugre (Holyoke, MA) delivered a pair of clutch baskets in the final six minutes to lift the Blazers to a 63-50 win over Becker College in Monday night’s North Atlantic Conference (NAC) women’s basketball game at the Maguire Center.

The Blazers won their season-high fourth consecutive game to improve to 8-11 overall, 7-6 NAC. Becker lost its second straight game to fall to 8-12 overall, 4-9 NAC.

The visiting Hawks battled back from a 29-22 halftime deficit and held a 44-43 lead with 6:20 remaining before sophomore guard Martha Arment (Lee, MA) hit a jumper and junior guard Karen Prattico (Holyoke, MA) followed with a 3-pointer on consecutive possessions to give the Blazers the lead for good at 50-44.

Although the Hawks cut the lead to 50-47 with 5:30 remaining, Dugre added a pair of putbacks on consecutive possessions and the Blazers then forced the Hawks into a turnover on their next possession.

From there, Kasala followed with a pair of free throws and a jumper in the Blazers’ next two possessions to give the hosts a 58-47 lead with 3:10 remaining.

Becker sophomore forward Jocelyn McNair (Durham, NC) netted an impressive game-high 22 points and 15 rebounds in 29 minutes before fouling out with less than three minutes remaining. Freshman guard Michelle Stockwell (Hudson Falls, NY), who scored a game-high 26 points in the Hawks’ loss to Mount Ida on Saturday, was held to 12 points in Monday’s loss.

Dugre finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the year, while Prattico and freshman guards Raemarie Josefiak (Springfield, MA) and Michelle Fernandes (Danbury, CT) all added eight points apiece in the victory.

Elms College returns to NAC play on Wednesday, February 9 at home against Mount Ida College. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m.
