Augsburg 85, Hamline 74

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Lucas Olson-Patterson (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) recorded his eighth double-double of the season and 14th of his two-year career at Augsburg College, scoring 29 points and pulling down 12 rebounds as the Auggies broke a six-game losing streak with an 85-74 win over Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball contest Monday night at Si Melby Hall.

Olson-Patterson scored 18 points and had five rebounds in the second half, as Augsburg overcame a seven-point second-half deficit to claim the win and improve to 8-13 overall, 6-10 in MIAC play.

The win was the first for Augsburg interim head coach Gabe Ziegler, who took over after Brian Ammann resigned on Jan. 31 after spending 17 seasons as Augsburg's head coach. Ziegler is now officially 1-2 as Augsburg's interim head coach.

Hamline has dropped six of its last eight games to fall to 7-14 overall, 5-11 in MIAC play.

Trailing 57-50 with 12:46 remaining, Augsburg used a 23-8 run over the next 8:44 to take a 73-65 lead. Olson-Patterson had 15 points in the key Auggie run. Augsburg expanded the lead to 15 points in the closing minutes.

Olson-Patterson extended his double-figure scoring streak to 28 straight games, including all 20 he has played in this season. In his two seasons at Augsburg, Olson-Patterson has scored in double figures in 40 of his 43 games.

Justin Koslowski (Fr., Wausau, Wis./Wausau Newman HS) scored a career-high 17 points for the Auggies, with six assists and five rebounds, and Dan Graf (So., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) had 14 points, five rebounds and three steals.

Hamline was led by Kyle Foster (So., Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS), who came off the bench to score 16 points with six rebounds and two steals. Adam Hakanson (So., Wheeler, Wis./Boyceville HS) had 11 points and Sam Wiener (So., Marshall, Minn.) had a double-double with 10 points, 11 assists and five steals.

As a team, Augsburg connected on 40 percent (24-of-60) from the field, hitting seven 3-pointers. Hamline shot 39.1 percent from the field and hit four 3-pointers. Both teams got the free-throw line often, with Augsburg hitting 30-of-41 and Hamline hitting 20-of-23.

Augsburg outrebounded Hamline by a 44-27 margin, including 20 offensive rebounds which the Auggies converted into 29 second-chance points, compared to just 14 off of 16 offensive boards for Hamline.

Both teams are back in action on Wednesday (2/9) at 7:30 p.m. with road games, as Augsburg travels to Concordia-Moorhead and Hamline travels to St. Mary’s. Both are part of men's and women's basketball doubleheaders, with the women's games starting at 5:30 p.m.
